“The shiny, silver sands of time
are slowly slipping by…
and though each grain eludes my grasp…my memories will not die. (Abigayle)
June 15, 2000,
Well, what do you know… it’s time to hit the road again. I’ve given my notice at work and am having all the necessary repairs made to Lucky. This has been such a wonderful period of my life and I am SO VERY GLAD I stopped here. If I hadn’t, I hate to think of all the things that would never have happened. Such as:
I made two new lifelong friends the night Ray and Judy walked into the restaurant. I often share my poetry with customers (almost every night) but with Ray and Judy there was a special connection. We all felt it and before the evening was over, they had invited me to go flying with them in one of their planes. They live in Los Angeles (Orange) but have a vacation house here on the Colorado River. I hadn’t been in Parker very long when we met and since that time we’ve spent MANY wonderful hours together. In fact, Ray just happens to be an attorney (as well as an engineer and retired pilot for TWA) and has offered to make my venture (Poetry on the Road) a non-profit corporation. That way, all contributions will be tax deductible and I could be eligible for grants. Isn’t that wonderful?
When I leave here, I plan to stop and visit my mother in Sacramento before going on to Portland. I’ll park at the home of a friend in Lake Oswego (my old business partner, Alan), while I get the website up and running. He has fixed an RV pad up just for me with electricity, water, telephone and even cable television. I really need to spend some time with my two sons (and my grandchildren) so what better place for me to take care of website business. While I’m in Sacramento visiting my mother, Ray is going to fly one of his planes from LA and pick me up. We’ll go to their house in Orange where he and I will take care of the incorporation procedure (and have a nice visit), and then fly me back to my mother’s house again. Now that’s what you call good friends!
So…wish me luck on my trip west. I’m really worried about Lucky making it because she overheats so easily. She’s been doing that since I first drove away from Gold Beach but I’m especially worried because the outside temperature is well into the hundreds and I’ll be climbing some pretty high mountains. I’m planning to leave during the night…hoping to catch the coolest part of the day, but I’ll be lucky if even that is under 100 degrees. I sure hope my guardian angel is working overtime. I have a feeling I’m going to need her.
Back in the saddle… and eager to get the show on the road!
